Blending ZIF-67 into PDMS membranes to promote the separation performance of propylene/nitrogen mixed gas

The membrane-based gas separation is well-suited for the recovery of hydrocarbons from nitrogen-rich exhaust gases. However, performance existing polymeric membranes was insufficient. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) synthesized and then incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare ZIF-67/PDMS mixed matrix via spin-coating method. resultant ZIF-67 were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope. C 3 H 6 /N 2 (20:80 vol) tests indicated that achieved higher factor but lower permeance in contrast with pure PDMS membrane. At loading 5 wt%, membrane displayed optimal 16.5 comparable 86.9 GPU. Besides, relatively low operating temperature pressure advantageous gaining good performance.

Continuous ZIF-67 polycrystalline membranes with effective propylene/propane separation performances were successfully fabricated through the incorporation of zinc ions into the ZIF-67 framework. The separation factor increases from 1.4 for the pure ZIF-67 membrane to 50.5 for the 90% zinc-substituted ZIF-67 membrane.
